Acting on behalf of an adult

Persons aged over 18 can decide for themselves if they want another person to manage their affairs. Persons placed under guardianship will also be able to grant mandates with certain exceptions.

If the e-service has allowed acting on behalf of another person with a mandate, a person aged over 18 can grant the required electronic mandates independently. For instructions, go to the Granting mandates as a person page.

A person acting on behalf of someone aged over 18 may also request mandates for transactions from a person aged over 18, in which case the assignor only needs to approve the mandate request. If the person acting on behalf of another person only notices that they do not have the necessary mandates when selecting the role of acting on behalf of another person in the e-service, they can proceed to Suomi.fi e-Authorizations to make a mandate request by pressing the Request mandates button. In this case, the mandate themes used in the service in question are preselected for the request.

Please note that services using Suomi.fi e-Authorizations cannot be used on behalf of another person in the following situations where either the assignor or the assignee is placed under guardianship:

  • The assignor is placed under guardianship. If the assignor's competency has not been restricted in the guardianship order, they can no longer grant mandates for matters that involve access to a bank account, for example, the possibility to edit bank account numbers in the service. In this situation, any mandates previously granted by the assignor that provide access to a bank account will be invalidated.
  • The assignor is placed under guardianship and their competency has been restricted or they have been declared legally incompetent. In these situations they will no longer be able to authorise anyone to act on their behalf in financial matters. Any mandates they have previously granted for any financial matters will be invalidated.
  • The assignee is placed under guardianship. If the assignee has been declared legally incompetent, they cannot act on behalf of a minor dependent on financial matters.

Acting on behalf of a person, who does not have a Finnish personal identity code, is not possible in all e-services. Check the website of the organisation responsible for the service to see if on-behalf transactions are possible.
