Starting to use the power of attorney
How is the power of attorney validated?
- Find the original power of attorney document.
- Obtain a medical certificate on the donor. Show the doctor the power of attorney document when requesting the certificate. In this way, the doctor knows that you have the right to obtain a medical certificate on the donor.
- You can speed up the validation process by requesting a statement from the donor and the donor’s spouse. The statement is a document in which the donor or a person close to the donor gives his or her opinion on the validation of the power of attorney.
- Complete the application.
- Send the original paper copy of the power of attorney document, the application, the medical certificate and any statements to the Digital and Population Data Services Agency.
How can I manage the donor’s affairs when the power of attorney is not yet validated?
You can continue to act on behalf of the donor as before. If, for example, the donor has granted you the right to use their bank account or Suomi.fi e-Authorizations, you can use them to manage the donor’s affairs.
Otherwise, you must wait for the validation of the power of attorney. You can only start using your rights as the donee after the Digital and Population Data Services Agency has validated the power of attorney.
What happens after the continuing power of attorney has been validated?
Your tasks as the donee will start after the power of attorney has been validated. You will be notified of this by post or by email. The Digital and Population Data Services Agency will return the original power of attorney document to you.
If the donor has granted you or someone else Suomi.fi e-Authorizations before the validation of the continuing power of attorney, they will remain in effect after the validation of the power of attorney.
