How do I tell my violent spouse about the divorce or separation?

It is important to ensure your own safety:

  • Tell your spouse or partner about the divorce or separation decision when you are not alone with your spouse. Ask someone close to be there.
  • If you divorce or separate at home, draw up a safety plan for the situation
  • Prepare for leaving the home, for example by packing a safety bag.

You can also go to a shelter and notify your spouse or partner of the decision to divorce or separate from the shelter. The shelter provides discussion and advice on issues related to domestic and intimate partner violence.

You can ask for advice on safe divorce or separation from Victim Support Finland, the Online Shelter or Nollalinja.

When you are considering divorce or separation

When you are in a relationship, it is natural to experience difficult times and have thoughts about breaking up. Thoughts can be based on a variety of things, such as different values or infidelity.

  • Consider whether the problems could be solved otherwise than by divorce or separation.
  • Discuss the thoughts about divorce or separation with your partner. The divorce or breakup process will probably be easier if it is based on a mutually considered decision.
  • If you are unable to solve your problems with each other, seek outside assistance.
