As an informal carer for a loved one

To get the best help for your situation, first answer the questions on the Preliminary questions page.

Help for a smoother everyday life

You need new skills for everyday life

As an informal carer, you take care of the everyday life and well-being of your loved one. You may help them with things like eating, hygiene and getting dressed. You monitor their well-being and ensure they get enough sleep, rest and exercise. You may also handle your loved one's medications and even medical procedures.

You may have to learn a lot of new things and tasks that you did not have to handle before. Your wellbeing services county can provide you with training and coaching if you need support for carrying out these tasks. Ask your own employee about training.

Can I get help with the everyday life of a family with children?

You don’t have to manage everything alone. A disabled child or young person may be entitled to a personal assistant in addition to having a family member act as their carer. The wellbeing services county pays for the salary of the personal assistant. If necessary, you can also apply for temporary care for your child or teen during your informal care leave. You can also get home aids

As a family, you can ask your wellbeing services county for home services if you need help because of your child's illness or disability or if you suffer from parental burnout. A home service worker will help you with tasks related to household chores and care and attention, and the care and upbringing of the children. Temporary family care might also be implemented at your home. If necessary, home nursing may also be provided to your child at home.

If you need support with life management or arranging things, contact the social instructors in family work services in your wellbeing services county. The family worker can also help you solve matters related to the daily life at home and the care and upbringing of the children.

Can I get support if my home needs alteration work?

If you need to make alterations to your apartment or have fixed aids installed there, you can receive compensation from your wellbeing services county. For example, your apartment can be made to be wheelchair-accessible. Fixed aids include various lifting devices, a fire alarm for the hearing impaired and a doorbell in which the sound is replaced by light.

The wellbeing services county offers support for making the necessary alterations to the home of a person with severe disabilities. The social worker of your wellbeing services county's services for the disabled will assess with you whether you need to make alterations to your home. You should submit an application for alteration work before starting the work to the wellbeing services county's services for the disabled. This way, you can be sure you are entitled to support. You may apply for support up to six months after the costs have incurred. You will need a statement from a physiotherapist or occupational therapist and a cost estimate made by the construction company or the municipal building supervision authority. The wellbeing services county may also request other reports.

The Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare's handbook on disability services (in Finnish)Opens in a new window. provides information on alterations to the home of a person with severe disabilities and on the reimbursement of costs.
