A visa is a permit on the basis of which a foreigner’s entry into and short stay in a country are permitted when they meet the other entry conditions. The Ministry for Foreign Affairs grants visas to Finland.
Do the following
Submit your application for the extension of a visa to the police service point responsible for permit matters.
You can find further information on how to extend a visa on the police website.
To whom and on what terms
The police may extend the validity of the visa and/or the permitted period of stay provided that the visa holder can demonstrate that they cannot leave the territory of the Member States before the validity of the granted visa and/or permitted period of stay expires due to an event beyond their control or humanitarian reasons.
Humanitarian reasons include a sudden serious illness of the visa holder (which prevents them from travelling) or a sudden serious illness or death of their close relative residing in a Member State. An event beyond their control could be the cancellation their a flight due to strike or weather, for example. In these cases, the extension of a visa is free of charge.
The duration of the visa granted and/or the duration of the permitted stay can also be extended in accordance with the Visa Code if the visa holder can demonstrate that the extension of the visa or stay is necessary for serious personal reasons. A serious personal reason may be, for example, the continuation of important business negotiations for longer than anticipated or the sudden deterioration of the status of a relative who had already fallen ill.
