What should I do?
My personal data has been stolen or leaked

To get the best help for your situation, first answer the questions on the guide's start page.

Identify the data that has been misused

Find out what information has fallen into wrong hands

If your personal data has ended up in the hands of any unauthorized parties, you must act immediately. This can reduce potential financial damage. Focus on one thing at a time instead of everything at the same time.

Try to find out what information on you has been stolen, leaked or viewed without justified reasons.

Remember that information can also fall into wrong hands when somebody has misused their access to confidential information and collected information on you without justified reasons. Such information includes your health and patient data, contact details blocked under a non-disclosure for personal safety reasons, and your role in a criminal process. Even if a person has professional access to your data, this person may only view your data as part of their work tasks.

When you are able to find out what information has been misused, it is easier to determine

  • the consequences of the data theft and
  • what action you should take.

How can my data be misused?

  • Your address, personal identity code and name can be used for fraudulent purposes, e.g. making purchases at your expense.
  • Your banking and credit card information can be used to make unauthorised purchases.
  • If someone gains access to your email, Facebook, or other web service password, they can use it to impersonate you and hijack your social media account.
  • If sensitive information, such as your patient data, is stolen from you, the information can be spread or it can be used to blackmail you.
