You can apply for a change to your tax card in the Tax Administration's MyTax e-serviceOpens in a new window., by telephone or by visiting your local tax office.

You need a new tax card if you are about to exceed your annual income limit. Your income exceeding the annual income limit is taxed at an additional percentage. Apply to the Finnish Tax Administration for a change to your tax rate. Remember to keep an eye on your income during the year.

Each spring, the Finnish Tax Administration sends a pre-completed tax return form to everyone over 16 years of age in MyTax.

If there is nothing to correct in your tax return, you do not need to do anything. If you want to correct some information, you must make the corrections by the due date provided by the Tax Administration. You can see the due date in your precompleted tax return.

You can supplement your tax return in MyTax or by paper forms. It is possible to submit some of the information required in the tax return in advance in MyTax.

Activate Suomi.fi MessagesOpens in a new window. to be notified of the pre-completed tax return electronically. After that, the tax return will no longer be posted to you. You can change the selection later. 

For example, you can receive tax deductions based on work-related expenses, travel expenses between your apartment and your workplace and external services purchased for your household.

You do not need to enclose any receipts with the tax return, but you have to keep all taxation-related receipts for three years from the end of the tax year.

In most cases, you will receive a tax decision with your pre-completed tax return in the spring. The tax decision includes

• outcome of your tax assessment
• amount of tax refund and date of payment if you receive a refund
• amount of back taxes and due dates if you have to pay back taxes
• the end date of your personal tax assessment.

If you make changes to your tax return, you will receive a new tax decision by the end of October.

If your tax rate on your tax card has been too high, you will receive a tax refund.

The Tax Administration pays refunds on several different days. The payment date depends on when your tax assessment is completed.

You can check the amount and payment date of your own tax refund in the tax decision.

Many Kela benefits are subject to tax. Some are tax-exempt.

You do not usually need a separate tax card for benefits. If you want to change your tax rate, you can order a new tax card.
