There may be impediments to concluding a marriage. For example, you cannot get married if you were married before and your previous marriage or registered partnership is still valid.
The examination of impediments to marriage is carried out to investigate whether the engaged couple can marry. The couple intending to marry must request an examination to impediments to marriage well before the wedding ceremony.
You can marry a person who is of the same or the opposite sex.
Minors, or persons aged under 18 years, cannot get married.
You cannot marry a person who is closely related to you. You cannot marry your
parent
grandparent
sibling
half-sibling
child
grandchild.
You can marry your cousin. For very good reasons, the Ministry of Justice may grant you permission to marry your brother’s or sister’s child.
Your or your future spouse’s citizenship has no effect on getting married. However, citizens of other countries must have a certificate from the authorities of their home country to prove that there are no impediments to the marriage.
Submit the certificate to the Digital and Population Data Services Agency in connection with the examination of impediments to marriage.
