Where can we get married?

A public servant from the Digital and Population Data Services Agency or the district court can come and marry you in the place chosen by you and outside the office hours, if this is agreed upon in beforehand. This may result in costs that you will have to pay.

The Evangelic Lutheran church will marry a couple when one of the spouses is a member of the church and the other belongs to some other Christian congregation in Finland or abroad.

If one of you is a church member and the other is non-religious or a member of some other religious group, you can have a civil marriage ceremony. After the civil ceremony, you can ask the Evangelic Lutheran church to bless your marriage.

The Evangelical Lutheran church has not made a decision to start to marry couples of the same sex. People within the church have different views of this matter, and they follow different practices. Couples should ask their parish to find out what the parish can do for its members who would like to conclude a same-sex marriage.

Religious communities with the right to marry couples include

• the Evangelical Lutheran Church
• the Orthodox Church
• some other Christian churches
• certain Muslim and Jewish congregations. 

Many other religious communities also have the right to marry couples: the Evangelical Free Church of Finland, the Pentecostal Church of Finland, the Baha'i society, Jehova’s Witnesses, the Hare Krishna movement, the Mormons, the Hindu community and the Buddhist community.
