Insurance safeguards the financial position of individuals and their families or companies in various situations of loss.
Finnish citizens are insured with many statutory insurances, particularly in working life. Employers insure their employees with statutory accident insurance, group life insurance, employment pension insurance and unemployment insurance. In addition to statutory insurance, individuals, companies and organisations can take out private insurance such as home and travel insurance.
In Finland, private insurance companies deal with some of the statutory insurance security, such as employment pension and statutory accident insurance.
Working under the auspices of the Bank of Finland, the operations of Finnish insurance companies are supervised by the Financial Supervisory Authority.
