Basic education

Every child and young person residing permanently in Finland is required to participate in statutory compulsory education.

After pre-primary education, the child is transferred to basic education, where comprehensive school comprises grades 1–9, which means that it is intended for children aged 7–16. Basic education is free of charge, and it includes not only classes but textbooks, other learning materials, tools and required student welfare services. In addition, pupils in need of special support have the right to receive support free of charge, such as assistive devices and interpretation and assistance services that they need to participate in education.
