Call the number 112 in an emergency

You can report an emergency by an SMS message if

• you cannot hear or produce speech
• you are in a situation where you cannot make a call.

An emergency SMS can be sent from any phone with a SIM card of a Finnish mobile service provider.

When you download the Emergency Response Centre Agency Finland’s 112 Suomi mobile appOpens in a new window. to your smartphone and call the emergency number via the app, your location is automatically transmitted to the Emergency Response Centre, and the Centre can send help to you from the nearest possible unit.

You can also use the app to

• call the Road User Line or the Maritime Rescue Centre
• call the emergency number also in other EU countries
• receive emergency, official and traffic bulletins based on your location
• check the location of the nearest defibrillator.
• search for on-call numbers that you can call when you need non-urgent help or crisis support.

Unnecessary contacts can cause delays in responding to real emergencies and have fatal consequences. A penalty may be imposed for use of the emergency number for the wrong reason or with malicious intent.

Unnecessary calls to the emergency number include:

• non-urgent situations
• situations where no one’s life or health is in immediate danger, such as enquiries about power cuts and traffic congestion
• asking for advice.
