Wetland management agreement

A wetland management agreement is an environmental agreement that promotes the management of multifunctional wetlands.

The agreement promotes water protection, biodiversity or the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, according to the location, extent and quality of each site.

The agreement is section-specific and will be valid for five years.

You can apply for a wetland management agreement and support/compensation in the Vipu service in May–June when applying for field subsidies.

To whom and on what terms

You can make an agreement and receive support for managing wetlands if

  • you are at least 18 years old
  • you are a farmer or you represent a registered association or a water rights organisation
  • you have at least 0.3 hectares of eligible land area.

The agreement can be concluded, for example, of

  • a wetland area
  • a peat field transformed into a mire-like area
  • flood area
  • a land area underneath natural channels or two-level channels and under management
  • floodplain or flood field and protection areas sufficient for treatment
  • the formation and management of small wetlands, dams and flood fields.
