Background information

The Patient Ombudsman advises health care patients on their status and rights. If a patient is dissatisfied with the care or treatment they have received, the Patient Ombudsman can assist them in filing a complaint with the director responsible for health care at the patient’s place of treatment.

The Patient Ombudsman also advises patients in situations where the conduct of health care staff gives rise to criminal or disciplinary proceedings. The Patient Ombudsman provides guidance on how to initiate matters before the competent authority or body. They also advise patients on how they can apply for compensation from the Patient Insurance Centre.

Each health care unit must feature a Patient Ombudsman. The same Patient Ombudsman may work in several units.
