The A licence

The holder of an A licence has the right to perform all repair, maintenance, tuning and modification work related to brake systems and their control devices, as well as brake adjustments of combined vehicles.

You can apply for a licence for a repair shop’s operation that is subject to licence from Traficom using electronic forms. Fill in the form online and send the related documents also in electronic format as an attachment to the application.

Conditions for obtaining a licence

The applicant is registered in the Business Information System

The applicant has access to appropriate workspaces for installation and repair work (brakes can be repaired regardless of weather conditions)

The applicant has adequately skilled personnel for installation and repair work.

The applicant has access to the equipment required for carrying out the work

2: Person responsible for installation and repair work

The person responsible for work related to brake systems must have at least a bachelor’s degree in technology or a technician-level degree suitable for the task, work experience in the field or at least five years of work experience in supervisory or car mechanic’s work at a car or trailer garage with a licence referred to in section 180 of the Vehicles Act. In addition, the responsible person must be verifiably familiar with the structure and repair of the brake systems of heavy-duty vehicles in practice. To obtain an A licence, they must also have completed a sufficiently comprehensive course on brake adjustment of combined vehicles.

3: Compulsory application documents

Copies of the responsible person’s education and work certificates.

4: Required equipment

Machine tools for machining brake drums (A and B licences)

Equipment for fitting brake drums to friction pads (A and B licences)

Deceleration measuring device (A licence)

Brake dynamometer (if measurement is based on computerised data collection, the deceleration measuring device as referred to in point 3 is not required) (A licence)

Equipment suitable for testing an anti-lock brake system (A licence)

Measuring device for breaking lag (A licence)

Friction pad riveting machine (A and B licences)

Vertical or axle load scales (A licence)

Sufficient measuring equipment including equipment for measuring brake pressure of a compressed air brake system (A and B licences)

Sufficient other general and special tools and necessary lifting equipment for brake repair (A and B licence)

5: Subcontracting

Subcontractor work may include machining brake drums, brake dynamometer measurements or axle load measurements. Attach the contracts for subcontracting work to the application.
