Psychiatric Day Hospital
- Public service
Treatment at Psychiatric Day Hospital is possible when outpatient care is not sufficient. Treatment at the Psychiatric Day Hospital is applied for through a referral from a psychiatric outpatient clinic, for example.
The treatment is accessed through a referral. The patient is expected to commit to the treatment and the goals that have been set together. The objective of the treatment period is to help the patient to have insight and understanding about their own life and history, support them in finding tools for coping in difficult situations and offer information about various topics, such as rehabilitation options, intoxicants, matters that support a well-balanced life, diagnoses, managing symptoms, medical treatments, etc. During the treatment period, a rehabilitation plan for the time after the day hospital will be compiled. The patients participate in the treatment every weekday between 8am and 2pm.
The treatment is based on cognitive and behavioural therapy methods as well as, in part, psychodynamic methods.
The treatment methods used in the day hospital are community care, group care, discussion groups, functional groups, information groups (=psychoeducation), family meetings, home visits, network meetings and medical treatment

Mental health services are operations that aim at preventing, relieving, and treating mental health disorders and their consequences. Mental health services also include preventive work, and they improve residential living conditions to support mental health.
In practice, mental health services are guidance, counselling, and psychosocial support for those who need it. Mental health services also include research, treatment and rehabilitation of mental health disorders.
Municipalities must organise mental health services through, for example, health centres and social services. Hospital districts, congregations, organisations, and private sector service producers also provide mental health services. The work of psychiatrists, psychologists, psychiatric nurses, such as depression nurses, and practical mental nurses promotes psychological well-being and functional capacity. The care of psychological illnesses can either be non-institutional or institutional, depending on the case.
