Initial ship inspection

The shipowner must ensure that a new ship or a ship starting to sail under the Finnish flag undergoes an initial inspection. During the initial inspection, the occupational safety and health authority ensures that the working and living facilities of the ship comply with the legal provisions and regulations.

The initial inspection is ordered by telephone or e-mail from the Division of Occupational Safety and Health of the Regional State Administrative Agency in whose area the inspection is to be carried out.

To whom and on what terms

The initial inspection shall be carried out, if possible, before the ship is taken into service, or no later than six months after the ship is taken into service. The initial inspection shall be carried out again if the ship undergoes substantial alterations.

A fee is charged for the service.

The initial inspection is subject to a fee. Travel expenses for initial and periodic inspections abroad will be paid by the shipowner.
