Grants for private roads

Apply for a maintenance grant from the technical board on a date to be specified, in accordance with the instructions given.

Submit the application documents for the road grant to the municipality by the end of the application period for the private road grant. Late or incomplete documents will not be taken into consideration.

Those roads belonging to a road association that have not applied for a private road grant in the previous year but believe they are eligible, should submit an application to the technical board. Grant application forms are available in the municipality's technical office.

For the obtainment of grants is needed that

1. a road management association has been established for the road
2. information about the road management association and the road are up-to-date in the private road register of the National Land Survey of Finland and in the information system Digiroad of the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency.

The municipality pays a grant for private roads, provided that the roads belonging to a road association supplies the municipality:

• the minutes of the latest annual meeting and the financial statements approved by the auditors for the year preceding the year of application, or submit the minutes of the annual meeting for the year of application in which the accounts for the previous year have been approved by the road association itself
• information about changes in the road association (length of road used by permanent settlements, account details, contact details, etc.)
• a written declaration that the information on the road association and the private roads are up-to-date and correct in the National Land Survey of Finland's register of private roads and the road and street network information system Digiroad.

To qualify for the grant, a road management committee must be set up and organized to manage the roads.

To be eligible also for a private road grant:

• the length of a private road must be at least 0,4 kilometres,
• the road is drivable with a car and
• there is at least one permanently inhabited household within the road's sphere of influence and the road is under the Private Roads Act.

A grant application for building, repairing and maintaining a private road may be submitted to the municipality. The municipality may decide that it will assume responsibility for maintaining a private road fully or partly. Grants are also available from central government funds.

If the central government or the municipality assist the road management association in maintaining the road, the road must be accessible for public use.
