The service is intended for clients of the wellbeing services county’s health services who are over the age of 16 and have been diagnosed with diabetes.

All health centres treat type 2 diabetes and secondary diabetes (diabetes associated with other conditions or syndromes).

Kerava Health Centre treats type 2 diabetes and secondary diabetes. The health centre offers appointments for both personal doctors and primary nurses. Primary nurses treat people with diabetes who are on insulin therapy or injectable medication for type 2 diabetes. Diabetes nurses in turn treat people with type 1 or type 2 diabetes who are on multi-dose injection therapy and have an insulin deficiency. For the time being, Kerava Health Centre does not treat patients on insulin pumps.

The health centres in Vantaa treat people with tablet-controlled diabetes. People with type 1 diabetes and people with type 2 diabetes on insulin or injection therapy are treated centrally in our diabetes units.

Specialised health care includes the initial treatment and monitoring of newly diagnosed type 1 diabetes for the first 1–2 years, the diagnosis of rare or unclear forms of diabetes, the initiation of insulin pump therapy and the treatment of diabetics who have a severe kidney disease. Diabetes care requires a doctor's referral.
