How do I apply for confirmation of gender?

You can apply for confirmation of gender with a written application from the Digital and Population Data Services Agency. Apply using the online form. The form is available in Finnish or Swedish. If you are unable to handle your matter online, please contact the Digital and Population Data Services Agency by phone.

After you have submitted the application, you will be sent an information package on how the confirmation of gender affects your rights and obligations. Please read the information package carefully.

After that, you must confirm your application in writing. You can do this at the earliest 30 days and no later than six months after submitting the application. Confirm your application using the online form. The online form is available in Finnish or Swedish. If you do not confirm your application, your gender cannot be confirmed, and the matter will lapse. In this case, you can submit a new application if you wish.

After you have confirmed your application, the Digital and Population Data Services Agency will issue a decision on the matter. If the decision is positive, the data in the Population Information System regarding your gender is changed as well as your personal identity code. The Digital and Population Data Services Agency will send you the decision and the information regarding your new identity code.

If you are married or in a registered partnership at the time of confirmation of gender, your form of partnership remains unchanged. The Digital and Population Data Services Agency will notify your spouse of the confirmation of your gender.
