The Environment services gives advice on how to feed birds correctly and states where feeding birds is prohibited in Helsinki.

The citizens can contact the Environment services if bird feeding causes any problems or if they have any questions concerning the feeding bans. The city, private landowners and housing companies have the right to forbid bird feeding in their areas.

The Chief of Environmental Health has prohibited bird feeding in many areas governed by the City of Helsinki. The bird feeding ban covers 11 market squares, 44 parks and 12 other areas in Helsinki. The aim of the ban is to reduce the rat problems in the city.

Feeding birds is allowed in areas where it is not specifically prohibited, provided that the feeding will not cause undue harm. The risk of a pathogen transferring from a wild bird to a human is small throughout the year.
