An age exemption permit is applied for in Traficom's My e-Services. Only an adult can log in to the service, i.e. the official guardian of the young person applies for permission, not the young person himself. In this way, the guardian gives consent to obtain a driver's license as a minor and guarantees all the information given, including exceeding the limits of a reasonable distance related to the need to travel. The guardian informs the service for whom an age exemption permit is applied for, and the service checks that the age requirement of 16 years and 8 months is met based on the young person's social security number.
All the additional information needed for the age exception permit decision is provided in the My e- Services. The mandatory certificate related to the basis of the application is either added as an attachment to the electronic application or mailed to Traficom's registry after the application (The Finnish Transport and Communications Agency, PO Box 320, 00059 TRAFICOM).
Both a negative and a positive decision is subject to a fee charged in accordance with the decree on fees charged by Traficom (110 €).
After the permit is granted, a 17-year-old may take the theory examination in category B, and, after having received the permit decision, the driving test. Drivers must always have the permit decision with them until they are 18, also when taking the driving test, and they must show it the police, where necessary. In order to be able to take the driving examination, they must apply for the driving licence permit separately. It is possible to apply for a driving licence permit for category B at the earliest when you are 16.
