What do I do?
Preparing for incidents and crises

To get the best help for your situation, first answer the questions on the guide's start page.

Power cut

How do I prepare for a power cut?

Everyday life is dependent on electricity. A long outage will stop almost all functions of society and the home.

The majority of people can cope with shorter power cuts of a few hours without major problems. Although a long disruption lasting for days and covering a large area is unlikely, it would make people’s everyday lives and the functioning of society difficult. The cessation of services, changes to everyday life at home and physical discomfort, for example, due to thirst or coldness, can put your coping to the test.

That is why we should also prepare for longer power cuts.

First, read the instructions and then do an exercise where you can think about how a wide disruption in the electricity network would affect you.

What should I do during a power cut?

Sometimes, the power may be out for a long time.

When the power is out in your area, follow the information provided by the local electricity network company on the causes and duration of the disruption. You can check your local situation at the Sähkökatkokartta.fi website in Finnish. The transmission system operator Fingrid and other authorities also provide information about more serious damage and disruptions as appropriate.

  • Based on their practices, electricity network companies may send their customers a notification of disruptions, for example by SMS.
  • You can search for information about the incident online for as long as your Internet connection is working.
  • The authorities provide information on the radio if other means of communication are unavailable.
