Maintaining your functional capacity during a crisis

We all react to crises in our own ways

Reacting to crises involves many stages, during which our experiences, thoughts and emotions related to the matter are evolving. It is normal to have different reactions to an unexpected crisis.

How do I maintain coping in the event of a crisis?

Long incidents and crises test coping.

Everyone has the ability and resources to adapt, cope and recover when something extraordinary happens. These may include:

  • social networks and relationships
  • psychological resilience
  • physical functional capacity

The coping mechanisms used during setbacks are also known as resilience or, in some cases, crisis tolerance.

It is important that you have the means to maintain your functional capacity even when things are not going as expected.

Where can I turn to get help with my coping?

If you are experiencing difficult feelings, you should seek peer support or professional help. Also take care of your loved ones and support them to seek help if necessary.

Different parties provide online, telephone and face-to-face counselling. A helpline may provide you with advice on who to contact.

Support providers include

  • healthcare and social welfare
  • church and other religious communities
  • non-governmental organisations.

During national crises, a separate crisis helpline may also be established.

You can also try MIELI Mental Health Finland’s self-help programme in Finnish that supports processing crises and experiences. Opens in a new window.
