Preparing for incidents and crises

To get the best help for your situation, first answer the questions on the guide's start page.

Disruptions in communications infrastructure

How should I prepare for disruptions in network connections?

Prepare for information acquisition and communication without an Internet connection:

  • Find out how your network operator communicates about incidents and activate messaging services.
  • Save your operator's customer service number on your phone.
  • Get a radio operating on batteries or otherwise without mains power. You often also have a radio in your car.
  • Agree on where to meet your loved ones if you are unable to get a hold of each other because of the interruption.
  • Find out if your operator can tell you how long the telecommunications network in your area will work if the electricity is cut off.

Also make sure you have entertainment at home that does not require an Internet connection.

What should I do during a disruption in network connection?

If possible, check for information about the disruption either on your operator's website or customer service by telephone.

  • If the error has not been reported, contact your operator and report the problem.
  • See your operator’s communications about the situation. Depending on the situation, the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency Traficom will also provide information on serious disruptions.

It is important that you receive information from somewhere even if the network is not working at all and the disruption takes a long time:

  • The authorities provide information on serious incidents on YLE’s channels if other communication channels do not work.
  • Find support from people living in your area. You can ask them for information and request help if necessary.
