Identifying the alcohol problem

When should I be concerned about alcohol consumption?

Many social situations involve alcohol and even heavy drinking has usually been considered acceptable in Finland. Therefore, alcohol consumption can become a problem even if you do not notice it yourself. Typically, people only become aware of their excessive drinking when others point it out.

Excessive alcohol consumption can affect health, work and relationships. People who drink excessively may also neglect their hobbies or give them up.

The spouse, children or colleagues may experience symptoms due to the drinking of another person. A person who consumes alcohol does not necessarily understand that a change in the behaviour of their loved ones is due to their drinking. People close to them may point out their drinking directly or make hints about it. The reactions of their immediate circle should be regarded as concern and an indication that the person’s drinking habits may need to change.

It may be difficult for people to admit to themselves and others that drinking has become a problem. If you feel you cannot manage your alcohol consumption, please seek help.

How can I tell if I drink too much?

People tend to underestimate their alcohol consumption. To monitor your alcohol consumption, note how many doses you have had or estimate your typical doses. Compare them with the risk limits.

Write up the doses on your phone or in a notebook. For instance, the Ottomitta application (in Finnish), downloadable on your phoneOpens in a new window. is also available for monitoring your consumption.

If you cannot remember the number of drinks you have had on a single occasion, this is likely to indicate that the risk thresholds have been exceeded. If the risk thresholds are exceeded, you should consider your alcohol consumption and, where necessary, seek help in a manner suitable for you.

Stories of problems with alcohol

People's stories about their own alcohol problem describe through experiences, what can make people drink and how to recover from the problem. You are not alone with your questions.

You can also write about your situation for yourself. For some, writing may be a therapeutic way of looking at their life and the reasons that led to the problem.

Read about the experiences of others or write yourself:

People's problems with alcohol and their recovery are also often reported in the media. Remember that the media may paint a straightforward, rosy image of recovery. The story may be limited to a certain perspective.

Please note that recovery means different things for different people depending on the goals or worldviews they have.

Counselling for problems with alcohol

Professionals and trained volunteers in healthcare and substance abuse prevention provide you with advice and personal help to identify your situation.

Take the matter up at the health centre of your wellbeing services counties or in occupational health care. You can book a separate appointment or bring up the matter at another visit. There is an obligation of secrecy in health care, so you can discuss the matter without, for example, your employer being informed.

Expert advice and guidance on the right services can be obtained from mental health, substance abuse and addiction services in your wellbeing services county.

Contacting an expert to determine your situation does not yet mean that you have a problem. In any case, it is good that you reflect on your behaviour and lifestyle. You can also receive further help if you feel you need it.

You can receive substance abuse counselling anonymously online. You can either ask a substance abuse expert or speak with an expert by experience, or a person who has had problems with substance abuse.
