These are guidelines for what to do if you suspect that you might have a problem with alcohol, illegal drugs, or gambling.

Recognise problematic use of alcohol

Have you noticed any of the following?

  • Alcohol consumption has started to affect your health.
  • You have been reminded of your alcohol consumption.
  • The behaviour of your family or friends has changed.

Seek information and help immediately if you feel that your use of alcohol is no longer under control. You have the right to receive support regardless of your situation.

Recognise abuse of illegal or pharmaceutical drugs

Have you noticed any of the following?

  • You use drugs more than before.
  • You use medicines for a different purpose than those prescribed.
  • Drug use or medicine abuse has started to affect your health.

Seek information and help immediately if you feel that your use of drugs is no longer under control. You have the right to receive support regardless of your situation.

Recognise your gambling problem

Have you noticed any of the following?

  • Gambling takes more and more time and money.
  • Gambling has started to cause problems in your relationships.

If you feel you cannot keep gambling under control, please seek help immediately.  You have the right to receive support regardless of your situation.

Understand your own situation

There are different kinds of tests and gauges that you can use to assess your situation. Advice and personal help are available from telephone helplines and chats. This can be done anonymously if you wish. You can also book a time to discuss the matter with social and health care or occupational health care.

Start on your own

When you start pursuing changing your life it is important for you to find a reason for it yourself. You can find different types of tools and materials online that can help. 

You should also consider joining a peer support group. Peer support and counselling are also available in person or online, and anonymously.

Seek help for economic problems

Seek help from an expert

You do not need to deal with your issues on your own. You have a right to get treatment. Contact medical services immediately if you cannot cope on your own. Professionals will work with you to find the type of treatment that is applicable to your situation.

You can also apply for the treatment of your choice without a referral from medical services, but then you will need to pay for the treatment yourself.

Seek support after treatment as well

After treatment and rehabilitation, you can receive support for getting your everyday life back into order and for dealing with your own feelings. If no agreements on aftercare were made during your treatment or rehabilitation, you could benefit from day activities, peer support groups, or therapy. Support is also available to help your loved ones cope with the situation.

Consider all areas of life

Pay special heed to your mental well-being and take care of your physical health and relationships. 

It is possible to examine an uncertain economic situation in different ways. Different kinds of online money management tools available. Social assistance and housing assistance from Kela can help if you do not have enough money to cover everyday costs.  

If you do not have a place to live, ask about supported housing or other housing services from municipal social services.
