Treating problem gambling

Support for gambling management as outpatient care

Gambling problems are treated by a wellbeing services county's mental health, addiction and substance abuse services. You can also get help from other social welfare and health care services, such as a health centre or occupational health care. If necessary, you will be directed to other services.

For financial worries, you can get help from financial and debt advisory services.

Organisations provide significant support for gambling problems. The services vary by region.

A diaconal worker from your local parish can also provide discussion support and help in an acute situation. You can get help even if you are not a member of the parish.

The services provided by wellbeing services counties, parishes and organisations are free of charge and usually do not require a referral.

Outpatient care for problem gambling

Outpatient treatment of a gambling problem may include, for example, therapy or other forms of rehabilitation. Treatment is necessary if there is an addiction, or if gambling has caused serious harm to you or your family and friends. Applying for therapy does not require a diagnosis of gambling addiction.

Gambling rehabilitation at a facility

Institutional rehabilitation may be needed when the problems caused by gambling are serious or if they are related to a substance abuse problem. In some situations, one’s employer may also demand it.

Gambling rehabilitation is organised in institutions in various parts of Finland. For institutional rehabilitation, you usually need a payment commitment from the social welfare and health care services of your wellbeing services county. A payment commitment can also be received by a care institution located in another location. You can get started by contacting your wellbeing services county’s health services or mental health, substance abuse and addiction services. You can talk to professionals about finding and choosing a suitable place of care.

A payment commitment received from the wellbeing services county means that you only have to pay a small share of the treatment, i.e. a deductible.

You may also go to institutional care without a payment commitment, but in this case you must pay for the entire treatment yourself. The costs may be quite high when paid for by the patient.
