Starting to use the power of attorney

1. Find the original power of attorney document.
2. Obtain a medical certificate on the granter. Show the doctor the power of attorney document when requesting the certificate. In this way, the doctor knows that you have the right to obtain a medical certificate on the granter. 
3. You can speed up the confirmation process by requesting a statement from the granter and the granter's spouse. The statement is a document in which the granter or a person close to the granter gives his or her opinion on the confirmation of the power of attorney.
4. Complete the application. As a rule, we recommend using the online form. Remember to attach your medical report and any other possible statements. Send the original paper copy of the continuing power of attorney document separately to the Digital and Population Data Services Agency by post.
5. If you cannot handle your matter online, submit your application, the original paper copy of the continuing power of attorney document, your medical report, and any other possible statements to the Digital and Population Data Services Agency by post.

You can continue to act on behalf of the granter as before. If, for example, the granter has granted you the right to use their bank account or Suomi.fi e-Authorizations, you can use them to manage the granter’s affairs. 

Otherwise, you must wait for the confirmation of the continuing power of attorney. You can only start using your rights as the attorney after the Digital and Population Data Services Agency has confirmed the power of attorney.

Your tasks as the attorney will start after the power of attorney has been confirmed. You will be notified of this by post or by email. The Digital and Population Data Services Agency will return the original power of attorney document to you. 

If the granter has granted you or someone else Suomi.fi e-Authorizations before the confirmation of the continuing power of attorney, they will remain in effect after the confirmation of the continuing power of attorney.
