Background information

Clients and patients of public and private health care are entitled to know what data concerning them has been stored in the personal data file. The request for information must usually be made using a special form or otherwise in writing. Staff may refuse to disclose patient data only if the disclosure would pose a serious risk to the patient’s health or the rights of someone else.

Only the patient has the right to check their own patient data. Other persons, such as those close to the patient, cannot obtain information concerning the patient’s health or illness except on the basis of the patient’s explicit consent.

The patient also has the right to demand the rectification of their data and, in some cases, its removal from the register. In addition, the patient may request information on who has used their register data, where they have been disclosed, and the grounds for their use or disclosure.
