Notification of the preferred name of a child

  • Service
  • Nationwide except the Åland Islands
  • Public service

As the child's guardian, you can notify the child's preferred name.

You can report one of the first names that have been entered into the Population Information System as the child’s preferred name. In other words, you cannot report a nickname, for example.

If the preferred name is already the child’s first name, you do not need to enter it as the preferred name.

Do the following

Submit the child’s preferred name primarily by using the online form. Attach the written consent of the other guardian to the notification. If the child is aged over 10, also attach their written consent to the notification.

If you cannot handle the matter online, fill in the PDF form and send it by secure email to vaestotiedot@dvv.fi. You can also send the form by post or bring it to one of Digital and Population Data Services Agency’s service locations.

Please note that a child aged 15 or over can also submit their own details in the Suomi.fi web service if they have means of strong identification, such as online banking IDs.

To whom and on what terms

You will need consent from all the child’s guardians for the notification. If the child is aged over 10, the child must also give their consent to change the preferred name.
