Changing a child’s mother tongue or notifying the communication language

As the child's guardian, you can notify the child's native language or communication language. The data is entered in the Population Information System.

You can change the child’s mother tongue recorded in the Population Information System. Only one native language can be entered into the Population Information System.

Do the following

Report the child’s native language or communication language primarily by using the online form.

If you cannot handle the matter online, fill in the PDF form and send it by secure email to vaestotiedot@dvv.fi. You can also send the form by post or bring it to one of Digital and Population Data Services Agency’s service locations.

Attach the written consent of the other guardian to the notification. If the child is aged over 15, also attach their written consent to the notification.

Please note that a child aged 15 or over can also submit their own details in the Suomi.fi web service if they have means of strong identification, such as online banking IDs.

Information on all service channels is not available in your chosen language. Change the language of the site to receive information on service channels in other languages.

To whom and on what terms

You will need consent from all the child’s guardians for the notification. If the child is aged over 15, the child must also give their consent.
