The start of autumn is a time when tens of thousands of students and thousands of families change addresses every year. This spike is also apparent at the Digital and Population Data Services Agency where, in just a few months, we typically process nearly 160,000 notifications of move, accounting for one fifth of the entire year’s figure. Most of the moves in early autumn are made by students moving to other municipalities, which require an official to manually process the change in each person’s municipality of residence.
The Digital and Population Data Services Agency is aiming to streamline this process and in the future, people will be able to monitor the progress of their notification of move on the Suomi.fi Web Service if the move was made within the last three months. The notification of move is the first Agency service that will allow people to monitor the processing of their notification from start to finish.
You can check the personal data that has been recorded in the Population Information System by visiting your Personal Data page, which is available on the Suomi.fi Web Service (Link: https://www.suomi.fi/your-data/personal-data). You can use the service to e.g. specify your preferred name and service language or prohibit the disclosure of your personal data.
Beginning in September 2023, you can also use the service to monitor the progress of your notification of move. The service can also inform users whether the processing of their notification has been initiated. The notification of move can be processed on the date of the move at the earliest. This is due to the fact that the Population Information System must always contain up-to-date information on the residence of each individual, which is why this information cannot be entered in advance.
The spike in notifications also has an impact on their processing time. The registration process currently takes between four and five weeks instead of the usual three.
