First things to do

When a person dies at home or elsewhere outside a healthcare unit, first call the emergency number 112.

If a close family member dies in a terminal care facility, follow the instructions provided by the care personnel in advance.

After the authorities have been notified of a person’s death, an investigation is carried out to determine the cause of death and, if necessary, the close family members are notified of the death by the police.

What documents do I need after the death of a close family member?

The first thing you need is the report on the deceased person’s family relationships. Make sure to request this document without delay because delivering it will take several weeks.

The report on family relationships is needed for the estate inventory but it may also be needed to manage banking and insurance matters, terminate a rental housing contract or to close social media accounts.

You should request the report on family relationships

If, during their life, the deceased person was a member of e.g. an Evangelical Lutheran parish and had been registered in the population register or a registered religious community, you must request the report from the parish in question and the Digital and Population Data Services Agency.

If the deceased person had lived outside Finland, you must request a certificate covering the period in question from the authorities of the countries concerned.Opens in a new window.

Before obtaining the report on family relationships you may be able to manage certain matters with an extract from the Population Information System. Make sure to find out about the matter in advance because there are differences between banks and other operators in this respect.

You may also need a life certificate. It may be required in the estate inventory, for example.
