When a death occurs

If a person dies for example in their own home this must be reported to the emergency number 112. After this, the emergency authorities are responsible for ensuring that the other authorities are notified of the death.

A doctor will sign the death certificate, which will include the cause of death. The doctor will also enter a notice of the death into the Population Information System. The deceased cannot be buried until a doctor has issued a burial permit.

If a Finnish citizen dies abroad, the cause of death is investigated and the deceased is handled in a manner compliant with the country's legislation.
