To whom and on what terms

In public health care, a doctor’s referral is always required for imaging examinations. Private service providers also offer imaging services without a referral.

All examinations are carried out following a referral only. The referral is written by a doctor in your health care centre, or by a hospital district doctor. We do not carry out examinations following a referral written by private doctors.

Background information

Imaging can be used to assist in the examination of illnesses and monitoring treatments. Imaging includes X-rays and CT scans, MRI and ultrasound scans, thermal imaging, and isotope analyses. Vital functions, such as sleep, alertness, or the brain’s electrical activity, can also be imaged.

Imaging is performed by hospitals, health and social services centres, and private service providers. Some images can also be taken at home and forwarded to the correct party.
