Vamia and Yrkesakademin I Österbotten offer vocational education in Vaasa.

VAMIA is run by the City of Vaasa and is a multidisciplinary vocational education organisation with approx. 7000 students per year (3000 fulltime). Vamia is offering vocational education to youth (16-19 years), to adults, to working life and to the industry. The programs offered are on EQF level 4 and specialist vocational qualifications on level 5. Vamia offers programs in Finnish, Swedish and English.

Almost 60 different vocational qualifications and over 40 study programs are offered within Vamia. The school has two campuses in Vaasa (Hansa campus and Sampo campus) and six fields of education: Energy services, Technology services, Wellfare services, Business services, Tourism services (hotel, restaurant/Catering, tourism, cleaning services) and General Education Services.

Special areas of development within Vamia are Energy thinking, Entrepreneurship, Internationalisation and Lean philosophy.

Vamia is also offering short-term trainings and tailor-made in-house trainings for companies and their personnel. In addition, Vamia offers a wide range of occupational card tests that are to be held for professionals in specific fields such as hygiene test, occupational safety card, first aid etc.

YA! - Yrkesakademin I Österbotten offer education in Swedish for both the young and old among others within the social sector, culture, work among animals and technology. Yrkesakademin I Österbotten is run by Svenska Österbottens förbund för utbildning och kultur (SÖFUK), which is a Swedish language education and culture federation of municipalities in Ostrobothnia.

To whom and on what terms

The service is free of charge.

The necessary study tools are also free of charge for students whose compulsory education includes secondary education. A student’s compulsory education includes secondary education if the student completed grade 9 of comprehensive school in spring 2021 or later.

Background information

Vocational education and training refers to vocational upper secondary education and training and vocational further education and training that lead to a qualification. Vocational upper secondary education and training leading to a qualification is intended for young people and adults.

In addition to their educational institution, students in vocational education and training acquire competence at the workplace and in online learning environments. Each student studies according to their own study plan and individual leaning needs. On-the-job learning is supported for example with apprenticeships. Application and completion of studies is flexible and studies can be completed in a shorter time than previously. Young people and adults are provided the same education and training services. Vocational education and training provide students with the competence and skills they need to apply for higher education studies.

Vocational education and training is provided by municipalities, joint municipal authorities, organisations, foundations or state enterprises that have an authorisation granted by the Ministry of Education and Culture.
