An urban forest means a small natural or nearly natural forest area located very close to residential neighborhoods.

These forests help reduce noise, block views, trap dust and make the built environment look softer and more pleasant.

They also provide shelter and food for a surprisingly wide variety of urban wildlife — from small birds and hares to even moose.

Do the following

Urban forests are open for everyone to enjoy outdoor activities and relaxation. Many of the larger forest areas have a fairly good network of trails or pedestrian and cycling paths, making it easy to move around in the area.

The city aims to maintain urban forests every year. If you have suggestions for maintenance, you can send them through the feedback service. However, not all requests can be fulfilled during the same year.

The city does not remove individual trees just because they cast shade or drop leaves or needles. Instead, the goal is to care for larger areas at once in a planned way.

If a tree appears to be unhealthy — for example, if it has no leaves in the summer, has lost its needles, or shows signs of rot — and it poses a danger to nearby buildings, traffic or people, you should report it through the feedback service.

To whom and on what terms

Cutting down trees, building structures or storing items such as cars in urban forest areas is not allowed.

Clearing willows or other small trees near your residential property also requires permission.

If you want to cut down trees on your own plot, you need a landscape work permit, which is granted by the building supervision authority.
