Background information

Persons with disabilities may be eligible for reasonable support for accessible housing so that they can live in their permanent dwelling independently or with personal assistance or other service.

Support for accessible housing can be granted for

  • dwelling renovations
  • removal of obstacles from the immediate surroundings of the dwelling
  • devices allowing accessible living and other technical solutions
  • planning of accessible housing.

Renovations qualifying for compensation may include widening of doors, building of ramps, necessary alteration work in toilets/bathrooms, and installing of protective railings for entrances.

The need for and provision of accessible housing support is determined in a service need assessment carried out on a case-by-case basis. Financial compensation can be granted for accessible housing support. The application for the compensation must be submitted within six months of the date on which the costs have arisen.

A person with disabilities may be eligible for accessible housing support if, because of a long-term functional impairment caused by a disability or illness, they cannot otherwise manage housing-related activities, such as housework, mobility or other independent activities in the dwelling or its immediate surroundings.
