The memorial was designed by the architect Arne Helander and sculpted by Ben Renvall. It was erected in 1941 at the cemetery on Leposaari island by the residents of Kulosaari in memory of the soldiers from the island who fell in the Winter and Continuation Wars. The cemetery was founded in 1925 when Kulosaari was still an independent municipality.
