Registering activities in the environmental protection information system

Operators whose activities affect the environment, are obliged to register their activities, in the environmental protection information system. The activity can be started when the municipal environment authority has registered the activity or 90 days have passed since the notification was submitted.

Do the following

Submit registration notifications to the municipal environmental protection authority, using the government’s environmental administration forms, which can be found in the links section of this page, and on the website of the Ministry of the Environment, by sector. Send the notification form either by mail or e-mail to the City of Kotka Environment Centre. The authority informs the operator of the registration.

To whom and on what terms

If a trader has established their business in another country within the European Economic Area and intends to provide their services temporarily in Finland, the trader is subject to the same obligations as all other traders established in Finland.

The activity to be registered must comply with the requirements laid down in the sector-specific regulation. The purpose of the sector-specific regulations is both to harmonise sector-specific environmental protection requirements, as well as to improve their predictability. The authority ensures that the activities comply with the requirements of the sector-specific regulation.


Deadline

Submit the registration notification to the Kotka Environment Centre, at least 90 days before starting operations.

Period of validity

The registration is valid as long as the activities exist.

Background information

Operators undertaking activities that affect the environment have the obligation to register their activities in the environmental protection information system. The activity can begin when the municipal environmental authority has registered the activity, or a period of 30 or 60 days have passed since the notification was submitted.

The obligation to register also applies to dry cleaners and activities that use organic solvents, as well as to concrete batching plants and concrete product plants. At the time of registration, the authority ensures that the operator complies with the relevant environmental protection requirements.
