Natural products permit

  • Permit or other obligation
  • Nationwide except the Åland Islands
  • Private service

You can collect non-protected flowers, forest berries, mushrooms, and fallen branches, cones, and acorns from places where movement is allowed under everyone’s right. For the collection of materials not covered by everyone’s rights, you need the landowner’s permission, which you can obtain from Metsähallitus for state-owned areas.

Do the following

You can purchase a natural product permit in Eräluvat webshop: https://www.eraluvat.fi/en/natural-products/natural-products-permits

To whom and on what terms

A natural product permit entitles to collect

  • spruce shoots,
  • rowan buds,
  • chaga mushrooms,
  • birch leaves,
  • branches of deciduous trees,
  • resin,
  • mosses,
  • branches of coniferous trees, and
  • non-protected herbaceous plants (when the collection amount exceeds what is allowed by everyman's right).

The following restrictions apply:

  • Spruce shoots and branches of coniferous trees must not be collected from spruce seedlings shorter than 4 meters. Top shoots must not be collected.
  • Chaga mushrooms must be removed carefully. Do not damage the living tree.
  • Birch leaves and branches of deciduous trees must be collected from deciduous thickets or the lower branches of planted trees. Planted trees must not be logged. Collection from planted birch groves is prohibited.
  • Resin may only be collected as surface runoff, as long as it has naturally flowed from the trunks of trees. Trees must not be damaged during collection, do not make cuts on the tree.
  • When picking sundews, ensure that the area is not stripped bare of sundews. At least 5 of the best sundew specimens per square meter must be left to grow. Avoid picking in sparse growth densities. Individual plants must not be picked.
  • The total collected amount of products must not exceed 50 kg or 200 liters.

You can collect natural products only from state-owned multiple-use forests designated for forestry. The permit doesn't cover collecting products from protected areas or areas with restrictions. See right areas in Retkikartta service Retkikartta.fi https://retkikartta.fi/ or ask the local forestry specialist (https://www.metsa.fi/en/about-us/contact-us/)
