Background information

You can go to a shelter at any time of the day if you are experiencing violence or the threat of violence at home. Women, men and non-binary persons are welcome at the shelter alone or with their children. The shelter is open to anyone in need of help, not only those with children. You can stay at the shelter for the time required by your crisis, usually from a few days to a few months.

In addition to mental support and counselling, the shelter provides assistance in organising practical matters, such as housing or a restraining order. Help is also available for perpetrators of violence.

The shelters are maintained by the member associations of the Federation of Mother and Child Homes and Shelters as well as wellbeing services counties. The activities are coordinated and funded by the National Institute for Health and Welfare (THL).
