Find out more about the prerequisites for design protection on prh.fi. You can use the PRH Design Database free of charge. The service provides access to basic data on pending design applications, valid design registrations and designs deleted from the register. The database also includes information on international design right registrations for which Finland has been marked as the destination country. If you so wish, you may order a novelty search from PRH against a fee.

Apply to register your design through the PRH e-service. Your design right will remain active if you renew the registration every five years. You can renew the design right up to four times, which means that your design will be protected for up to 25 years.

To whom and on what terms

One or more private persons or a company can apply for a design right.

The design can be registered if it fulfils the following criteria: the design has to be new, it must have individual character and it has to be the result of creative intellectual work. A design is considered new if no identical design has been made public before the filing date of your registration application. A design is considered to have individual character if it gives a different overall impression from any other previously known design. Thirdly, the design has to be the result of creative intellectual work. This means that overly simple and ordinary designs cannot be registered.
