Assistive devices and related services are provided free of charge. The services include assessing the need for an assistive device, fitting and loaning the device, instruction on how to use it, and maintenance and repairs.

Do the following

You can get basic assistive devices from the physiotherapy services at your own health and social services center or clinic, or from a regional assistive device unit. Basic assistive devices include mobility aids such as canes and walkers, as well as personal hygiene aids.

Specialized assistive devices are provided by the regional assistive device unit. A recommendation from your healthcare provider is required for these devices. Specialized assistive devices include, for example, powered wheelchairs, environmental control devices, breathing and communication aids, and assistive devices for children.

If needed, a family member or other close person can also collect the assistive device for you. Large assistive devices are delivered to your home by the assistive device unit, and delivery is arranged separately.

Assistive devices can be returned to the nearest health and social services center, clinic, or regional assistive device unit.

Background information

In order to obtain an assistive device for medical rehabilitation, the need for the device must first be determined by an expert in the field. Depending on the case, this expert may be a doctor, physiotherapist, occupational therapist or assistant physiotherapist. Assistive devices include wheelchairs, walking sticks, shower seats and devices that support their user’s vision, hearing and communication.

Assistive devices can be borrowed for a short period without an expert’s statement. Assistive devices that can be borrowed free of charge from public health care services include crutches, walking sticks, raised toilet seats, bed raisers, wheelchairs and walking frames.
