Approval of aquaculture establishments

Before the start of operations, the establishment of aquaculture animals must be notified to the aquaculture register to the Economic Development Centre and apply for authorization from the Food Authority. Application forms are available on the Finnish Food Authority website.

The application shall contain the details of the operator and the establishment/establishments. The application shall be accompanied by an operational biosecurity plan.

To whom and on what terms

The competent authority may grant approval if

  1. establishments comply with legal requirements, where applicable, for quarantine, isolation and other biosecurity measures, surveillancerequirements and record-keeping
  2. establishments have equipment and facilities that are sufficient to reduce the risk of transmission and spread of diseases to an acceptable level, taking into account the type of establishment concerned and of a capacity adequate for the species, categories and quantity (numbers, volume or weight) of aquatic animals concerned
  3. establishments do not pose an unacceptable risk of disease transmission, taking into account the risk-mitigation measures in place
  4. establishments have in place a system which enables the operator concerned to demonstrate to the competent authority that the requirements laid down in points 1, 2 and 3 are fullfilled.

Deadline

The authprozation must be valid before commencing operations.

Processing time

Approximately one month.

Period of validity

The authorization will remain valid until further notice.
