Applying for approval of the sustainability scheme

  • Permit or other obligation
  • Nationwide
  • Public service

The sustainability of biofuels, bioliquids and biomass fuels can be demonstrated through the approval of the operator’s sustainability scheme. The sustainability scheme demonstrates that biofuels, bioliquids and biomass fuels produced, manufactured, imported, released for consumption or used by the operator meet the sustainability criteria.

An operator must apply for the approval of the Energy Authority for its sustainability scheme, after which the operator can show a sustainability certificate for biofuel, bioliquid or biomass fuel lots as evidence that it meets the sustainability criteria.

Alternatively, an operator can demonstrate the sustainability of biofuels and bioliquids through a voluntary scheme of their choosing that has been approved by the European Commission.

The Energy Authority maintains a list of approved sustainability schemes on its website.

Do the following

Biofuels and bioliquids:

1 Devise a sustainability scheme following the sustainability criteria instructions

2 Obtain a verifier in accordance with the sustainability act and order the verifier’s statement on the sustainability scheme

3 Fill in the sustainability scheme approval application form, attach the verifier’s statement and submit the application with its appendices by email to kirjaamo@energiavirasto.fi.
