Pupils in basic education have the right to receive guidance counselling.

The goal in student counselling is to promote the pupils’ holistic welfare and the progress of their studies.

In student guidance counselling you get support in planning your future and further studies. Counselling is given to every student in basic education.

Some schools in Helsinki give bilingual instruction (kaksikielinen opetus). In that case, the instruction takes place in Finnish and another language.

Vantaa provides teaching of a student’s own native tongue, home language and maintained language for two hours per week.

In grades 7 through 9, pupils study common and optional subjects in line with the national distribution of lesson hours.

The aim is to provide students with instruction in their own mother tongue or home language. Instruction is organised based on student enrolment.

Basic education is for all children and young people between 7 and 16 years. The school lasts for 9 years and is free of charge.

In grades 7–9, teaching is carried out by subject teachers. Each class also has its own homeroom teacher.
