Acting on behalf of a granter of a continuing power of attorney

As an attorney, you can act of behalf of the granter, i.e. the person that made the continuing power of attorney, under certain conditions. The right to act on behalf of a granter varies depending on what is agreed in the power of attorney and what affairs are to be managed.

Managing financial affairs does not require a mandate for transactions

The granter may have granted you the right to manage their financial affairs in the continuing power of attorney. In this case, you can act on their behalf in financial matters without a separate Suomi.fi mandate after the Digital and Population Data Services Agency has confirmed the continuing power of attorney. However, you will need a separate mandate from the granter if:

  • the granter has more than one attorney
  • the right to manage financial affairs only applies to a certain part of the granter’s assets or your power as an attorney has been otherwise limited.

A mandate for transactions is required for all other matters than finances

A granter that has made a continuing power of attorney can grant mandates for transactions either independently at suomi.fi/e-authorizations or with assistance.

A granter can grant mandates at suomi.fi/e-authorizations/ in two ways:

If the granter no longer uses electronic services, they can grant mandates and approve mandate requests with assistance. Read more about assisted authorisation.
