Registration of a death abroad in the Population Information System

If your family member passes away abroad, you must notify the Digital and Population Data Services Agency of the death. When the Digital and Population Data Services Agency receives the notification and an official certificate stating the person’s death, the death will be registered in the Population Information System. Do the following
- Submit a notification of the death to the Digital and Population Data Services Agency. If the deceased was a Finnish citizen, you can also submit the notification to the nearest Finnish diplomatic mission.
- Submit the original death certificate issued by the foreign authority. An extract from the population register issued by the Nordic authorities as well as an extract from the population register issued by the Estonian authorities in English, in which the death is stated, is also accepted as the certificate.
- It is recommended that you attach a copy of the passport of the deceased to the notification.
- You may need to have the documents legalised or translated. See separate instructions for legalisation.

To whom and on what terms
For the death to be registered, it must be possible to verify the identity of the deceased and reliable official documents concerning the death must be presented to the Digital and Population Data Services Agency.
